Twisters (2024)
Director: Lee Isaac Chung
As a die-hard fan of the original Twister (1996), I approached Twisters with cautious optimism. Could it match the thrilling spectacle and emotional pull of the first film? The answer is a resounding yes. Not only does it honor the legacy of its predecessor, but it also carves out its own storm-chasing identity with heart and high-octane drama.
Daisy Edgar-Jones leads the charge as Daisy, the determined daughter of Jo and Bill, but Glen Powell as her storm-chasing partner, Jack, is the film’s undeniable spark. Powell oozes charisma, delivering humor and warmth in a way that balances Edgar-Jones’ intensity. Their dynamic—equal parts playful banter and unspoken connection—grounds the film amidst the chaos. Powell’s swagger and fearless charm remind me of Bill Paxton’s easy magnetism in the original, making him the perfect counterbalance to the story’s emotional weight.
The tornado sequences are, as expected, jaw-dropping. Each storm escalates in ferocity, brought to life with cutting-edge effects and an immersive score by Hildur Guðnadóttir. But the true strength of Twisters is its heart. The nods to the original, including the return of Dorothy, are woven seamlessly into a story that feels fresh and emotionally resonant.
While some disaster movie tropes linger, Twisters is a worthy sequel that both thrills and moves. For fans of the original, this storm is one you’ll want to chase.
